What we're fighting for

Doctors, nurses, ambulance officers and police are, quite simply, sick and fearful of dealing with the effects of intoxicated patrons of licensed premises late at night and in the early hours of the morning. They are abused, intimidated, threatened, assaulted and injured in the course of their duties.
While hoteliers pocket the profits from the sale of alcohol, frontline workers are left to pick up the pieces.
In March 2008, Newcastle brought in a suite of measures including lock-outs, compulsory closing times and restrictions on the sale of spirits after 10pm to deal with the area’s burgeoning alcohol problem.
A recent report by the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research showed that those measures helped bring the number of alcohol-related assaults after dark in the region down by 30 per cent.
Newcastle is proof the measures work, so now we want them introduced state-wide. Alcohol-related violence is a problem state-wide – we need a state-wide solution.
